Ah. [ Hello, person he's never seen. ] Roommate, I'm pretty sure.
[ He holds up the key ring in his hand where his copy of the apartment key jingles nicely.
Maybe it's because he spends so little time home to begin with that he's never actually met the other two people that live there. More or less Takayuki goes in to sleep and then leaves as soon as the sun's up, but there's a lot about Gloucester left for him to learn-- no time to stay home between that and work. ]
I'm Takayuki Yagami. They hired me a couple days ago. [ Smiling sheepishly, he rubs the side of his neck. ] Sorry it took me so long to introduce myself.
Oh, nothing fancy, just some low-effort stroganoff--
[But she immediately turns off the heat on the garlic so that she can give her new roommate her full attention, making no secret of the fact that she's sizing him up.]
They've cycled me through a few roommates since I've been here. First there were two kids, but they just...
[She waves a hand.]
Poof. I assume you've heard that happens sometimes?
...not in "poof" terms, no. [ Takayuki removes the backpack on him to set down on the counter, then pulls out about six cans of coffee from it. ]
I guess you're Ms. Quigley, right? [ She'd mentioned an "Ade" when he first got in, after all. ] You sound like a veteran around these parts. I could use the guidance.
But compared to you, sure! So, you know how people just arrive here mysteriously? They disappear mysteriously sometimes, too. Kind of a lot, actually. No bodies are found, no clues, no nothing, so I think they probably just get pulled back home. Or, maybe, to another world like this one?
[Satisfied that she's given him enough of a once-over for now (it'd be nice if ADI would give her a female roommate to galpal around with someday, but hey, at least this guy's good eye candy), Misty turns back to the stove, turning the heat under the garlic on low.]
Investigations and medical, yeah, but this isn't the kind of thing ADI gives us the resources to look into, and I've never had much progress looking into it on my own. Here in ADI housing, ADI sends people to clear out their stuff.
[ Old habits have him feeling pretty glad the intense staring didn't earn him some kind of beating, even if Misty doesn't seem much like the yakuza he grew up with. Though he's stopped feeling self-conscious about such things overall, the brief sense of accomplishment in approval has yet to fade.
Leaning against the counter, Takayuki sips leisurely at his coffee and decides it's his turn to watch her, even if it's just as she cooks. ]
What the briefing told me was that they'd usually do their best to provide us with what they can to help "save the world"... [ Not that he knows how to take that just yet, though. ] Maybe they don't think serial disappearances're worth investigating for whatever reason.
Especially if they just chalk it up to glitches in whatever brought us here in the first place. And, hey, they're probably right! But all I'm saying is, it would be a really convenient thing for a serial killer or kidnapper to use to their advantage.
[She transfers the browned garlic to a side dish, then adds cream to the warmed pan.]
But if you want to investigate this on the side, consider me interested!
Is it in your job description to investigate the people you work for? [ He smiles a bit as he says it, though, admittedly a bit impressed at the initiative. Takayuki's no stranger to selfish organisations that could've prevented so much shit if only the truth had come out sooner, so folks like Misty are a breath of fresh air. ]
I was under the impression this place is secure enough that serial killers and kidnappers shouldn't be able to get in. [ He shrugs one shoulder up. ] Unless you mean one of us being one.
Even then, I don't think they could pull off just disappearing a person. People leave a lot of traces behind by nature-- if not the culprit, then the victim.
Oh, well, I didn't necessarily mean in ADI housing. Someone could easily disappear when they're off investigating something in the woods. Especially if they have supernatural powers, which... well. Pretty much all of the bad guys seem to.
[Mushrooms go into the pan next.]
I don't necessarily think ADI is behind it. I think it could potentially be in their best interests to convince us not to worry too much about it, because if we're trying to solve the mystery of our missing coworkers, that means we have less time to focus on what ADI thinks is more important.
[ Fingers wrapped around his coffee can, Takayuki processes this. ]
You're telling me that people just... genuinely poof out of nowhere? Like in the middle of their day? [ Earlier he'd assumed it only happened in the dorms. The thought of it happening anytime gives him massive pause. ]
Jeez. What kinda "bad guys" are we talking about here, Ms. Misty?
[She hesitates, not wanting to sound unknowledgeable, but not wanting to provide false testimony here, either.]
I assume? I have no evidence that people only disappear in a certain place or in a certain way.
How much has ADI told you about the people who are working to cause chaos and bring on the apocalypse? Have they told you about Avatars, about Katie Dunn, about Deepthi Anand...?

What do you mean no clues? As in... [ He's trying to find the right word in his head. ] They just "stop existing", suddenly? What about their stuff?
[ Five coffees are put in whatever space he can find in the fridge. One of them is popped open for him to sip out of. ]
You with Investigations or something? Has the ADI ever looked into that?
